An injury can change your life. A recent graduate of BEST can now say, "For the better!" This student enrolled in BEST for retraining due to a back injury, which left her unable to continue working in the home health field. Although nervous at first, this student excelled in class. She overcame her fear of the computer and gained more confidence each day as her skills improved. She also assisted her classmates when needed, which demonstrated her caring attitude towards others. The BEST program provided the marketable skills she needed to obtain the job she wanted, billing clerk at a local hospital. With excellent pay and a benefits package, this individual is back in the workforce, happy and proud of her accomplishments. Her self-doubt and worry have been replaced with confidence and a new career. She faced her challenge head-on, and her determination to succeed was recognized by her current employer. She has been rewarded for her accomplishments and is a genuine success story.
In the spring of 2003, two BEST graduates obtained employment in the registration department at a local hospital. Big deal? It is when you consider that these individuals had over twenty-five years experience in the RETAIL FIELD! Both students were dislocated workers due to the closing of their store, and both wanted to make a career change. Their goal was to acquire skills to qualify for office positions in hospitals located in the Tri-State area. With limited skills and a tight labor market, they knew this would be difficult. They were referred to BEST for training and excelled right away. Each student displayed positive attitudes and completed BEST with high scores in all components. With the skills gained in BEST, both individuals were able to obtain full-time jobs with excellent pay and great benefits. They reached their goal of making a career change, and both landed the jobs they wanted. These graduates proved that desire, attitude, motivation and the right training can make dreams come true.
Sara Smith has learned the importance of work. A long time welfare recipient with little previous work experience, an anxiety sufferer who has four children, Sara found herself dependant on the state government. Due to welfare reform, Sara found herself in a Community Work Experience Program at Goodwill. She actively participated thirty hours a week for one year, learning the necessary skills to become a good employee and to be self sufficient. Upon completion of her program and with staff's help, Sara applied for and obtained a forty hour a week sales clerk position. She even has benefits!
Finally after a suggestion from a friend who had seen a counselor at Family Service, Ann called to schedule a counseling appointment. She had felt overwhelmed for several months and her family doctor had prescribed an anti-depressant. Although this medication helped with her low energy and worrisome thoughts, she knew she needed to change some things in her life and gain some coping strategies to get back to her old self. She was seen for individual therapy over a period of several weeks and began the process of setting some personal goals and getting her life back in order. Work and family commitments, and pressures had become too much to deal with on a daily basis. Through counseling, she received the help she needed to clarify her feelings and work on her personal situation in a non-judgmental setting. Her therapy was short-term and helped her gain the confidence she needed to deal with ongoing issues in everyday life.
